Living near San Francisco meant a reliable supply of sourdough was always available. Boules, baguettes, batards, the occasional sandwich loaf. We had it all. And it was delicious.\n\nTwo months after our daughter was born I started developing my own sourdough starter. It was a process, rife with trial and error. But with a little persistence it paid off.\n\nIf you're interested in going down this road yourself, check out [The Perfect Loaf](https://www.theperfectloaf.com/7-easy-steps-making-incredible-sourdough-starter-scratch/).\n\nAfter seven days of work, and one sub-par early attempt at a loaf, I had my starter. And I named it Fred.\n\nFred has now been with us since February 25th, 2020, and with luck will be with us for a long while. We've baked a lot of bread already, and a few fun little projects here and there like cinnamon buns and babkas.\n\n---\n","media":{},"series":{},"related":[{"title":"Thunderbolt Sub","href":"/recipes/1751951070010-thunderbolt-sub","section":"recipes","description":"First attempt at cloning the Thunderbolt Italian Sub.","publishedAt":"2025-07-07T22:04:00Z"},{"title":"Small Batch Croissant Loaf","href":"/recipes/1743442618201-small-batch-croissant-loaf","section":"recipes","description":"A small laminated milk-bread loaf made with a pasta roller and a 115-gram butter block.","publishedAt":"2025-03-31T10:36:00Z"},{"title":"Caramel Apple Mille Feuille","href":"/recipes/1710563320517-caramel-apple-mille-feuille","section":"recipes","description":"Elegant mille-feuille dessert with flaky puff pastry layers, caramelized cinnamon apples, and vanilla cream.","publishedAt":"2024-03-15T21:28:00Z"},{"title":"Neopolitan Pizza Dough","href":"/recipes/1710031406664-pizza-dough","section":"recipes","description":"Classic Neapolitan pizza dough recipe using 00 and all-purpose flours.","publishedAt":"2024-03-09T16:43:00Z"},{"title":"Challah","href":"/recipes/1602505860000-challah","section":"recipes","description":"Traditional challah recipe with simple steps: mix yeast, water, flour, salt, honey, oil, eggs; knead, proof, braid, rise, brush with egg.","publishedAt":"2020-10-12T11:31:00Z"},{"title":"Crème Brûlée","href":"/recipes/1727460674219-creme-brulee","section":"recipes","description":"Vanilla custard baked in a water bath and finished with a caramelized sugar crust.","publishedAt":"2024-09-27T11:11:00Z"}],"prev":{"title":"Deploy html on Replit","href":"/posts/1691436904927-deploy-html-on-replit"},"next":{"title":"Revisiting Obsidian as a CMS","href":"/posts/1699332127006-revisiting-obsidian-as-a-cms"}}}
